Luke 2:36-38

And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

Reflection

Anna was a widow of advanced age. She lived with her husband for only seven years, and then he died. After he dies, what she does next is quite surprising. She remains in the temple, dedicating herself to worship with fasting and prayer. Her commitment to a life of worship and seeking God's presence is an incredible example for believers today.

One particular day in the temple would forever impact Anna’s life. It was the day Mary and Joseph brought their baby Jesus to the temple for presentation. Anna recognized the significance of this child and began to praise God. Her response was not only one of joy but also a declaration of the Messiah's arrival. Jesus’ arrival fulfilled the long-awaited hopes of the redemption that God had promised many years prior.

We live In a society that is often marked by busyness. Many find themselves tethered to technology and feel that there is insufficient time to do anything. Anna’s dedication to worship stands out as a powerful example. She teaches us that a life of devotion and intimacy with God prepares the heart to see God at work. A life of worship prepares one to see Jesus!

Anna recognized Jesus as the promised redeemer and began sharing this good news with everyone, demonstrating the profound impact a personal encounter with Jesus can have on our lives.

As we reflect on Anna's story, may we be challenged to cultivate a life devoted to worship. Her example reminds us that God can use anyone who keeps their eyes on Him. May we, like Anna, remain dedicated to a life of worship, eagerly anticipating and recognizing the transformative power of encountering our Jesus.
